  1. Actions speak louder than mission statements. If a UX feels more like “User Exploitation” than “User Experience,” business becomes ripe for disruption.

  2. Companies like Nike have realized that they’re no longer just making and marketing products; they’re really in the business of crafting user experiences.

As Dan Maccarone, CEO and co-founder of product design firm Charming Robot, puts it, “The experience is the brand.”

In an omnichannel world, the user experience starts long before customers put their hands on the product or download the app. It encompasses everything from advertising and website design to social media, retail displays, packaging, the Muzak that’s playing as shoppers enter the store, the help they receive from a salesperson or a chatbot and the subject line on the emailed receipt.

  3. Well-designed digital systems and government websites are crucial for e-governance to succeed.

Governor of Hawaii David Ige had a Muffley moment earlier this month. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency had just pushed out a false ballistic missile alert on cellphones and airwaves. Ige was informed of the mistake within 2 minutes. But it would take 38 minutes for a public correction. The alert system, it turned out, had no cancellation option. How, Ige might have wondered like Cold War satire Dr. Strangelove’s hapless US President Merkin Muffley facing the prospect of nuclear armageddon, was it possible for the thing to be impossible to untrigger?

With search engines getting smarter thanks to the increasing usage of machine learning, old SEO tactics are thankfully being rendered useless.

  5. As modern enterprises embrace sophisticated HRMS solutions, most HR teams and vendors are now under tremendous pressure to push user adoption, improve ROI, and consolidate benefits. 6. Today, startups that build tools for businesses looking to automate their customer service experience and operations are being acquired by global companies.

Though they may have the necessary automation tools that may be required during the digital journey, they may not necessarily have the experience to accelerate the digital transformation itself.

User/Customer Experience (CX) is the most important element in the journey of digital transformation that every organisation should be striving to improve.

  7. Imagine, you are given the task of designing the package for a Soap brand. The first set of questions you would ask are, “Is it a soap bar or gel?”, “What is the quantity?”, “What kind of fragrance does the soap have?”, “What is its shape if it is a bar?”, etc. Now if the client says, “The fragrance and shape haven’t been decided yet. But let’s make the packaging first keeping a generic soap bar in mind. We can think of these things, later.” In this scenario, where would you start? What colours will you use? What will be the messaging on the packaging? What kind of visuals would you use? Will you be able to come up with a design for the packaging without any of these coherent details? The answer is a resounding ‘NO’!

While designing the UX of a website, the content is like the ‘Soap bar’ and the packaging, the UX design you come up with. Here are some of the reasons why UX designers and product owners need to start adopting a content-first approach –

  8. Somewhere along the journey of web maturity, we forgot something important: user experience is not art. It’s the opposite of art. UX design should perform one primary function: serving users. Your UX design has to look great, but it should not be at the expense of hampering the working of the website.

Will Grant’s book presents 101 UX Principles as a shortcut for UX professionals. Designers can apply them to their products and make usable software 99% of the time for 99% of users. In this article, we’ll discuss Will’s 10 commandments for effective UX design. These 10 principles are a broad set of guidelines for designing digital products. You can check out the remaining 91 principles in the book, for applying effective UX design to create more usable and successful products. Read our interview with Will for more insights.

  9. Like me, you may have come across people who appear obsessed with security but happily book cabs, order food, and even make payments on their mobile phones without entering a single password / PIN.

This is not as contradictory as it seems if you look at the end-to-end customer journey.
