  1. E-commerce business models are undergoing a dramatic shift. Initially businesses relied on consumers to do the 'heavy lifting' to discover the product and to make the purchase decision. The vendor's role was to ensure that the product was discoverable and — most importantly — available at the geographic location where the transaction potentially would take place.

But the new e-commerce business model is optimized by driving the consumer to subscribe to 'an experience.' Think of Spotify or Apple Music, for example. The customer purchases access to a seemingly endless supply of music and tools that ensure their experience is maximized. The focus of the experience moves from a 'warehouse experience' to more of a concierge, personalized and curated experience. The consumer has already purchased, and so the emphasis is placed on ensuring that they stay engaged and active. Most importantly, the service makes recommendations and learns what the consumer likes, making the discovery of music a delight. In this model the better the tools engage the customers the better the company will prosper.

  2. For any enterprise embarking on a digital transformation journey, there is an unavoidable tinge of excitement as the organization prepares to change and evolve. Yet, despite this enthusiasm, all companies preparing to undergo digital transformation face a multitude of challenges, most of which cannot be anticipated. There is however one common fear facing enterprises: the fear of the unknown.

The truth is that few companies fully understand what they are getting themselves into. Justification for digital transformation is often a matter of survival: the need to drive efficiency, embrace business agility, elevate the customer experience, take web 2.0 competitors head on, and many other compelling business outcomes.

  3. Digital transformation remains a hot topic in the C-suite. However, transformation efforts are meeting with mixed results. Over 60 percent of companies Lopez Research surveyed strongly agreeing with the statement "Our digital transformation efforts are moving slower than expected." Successful digital transformation efforts require a company to operate its business effectively while simultaneously navigating people, process and technology changes. The delicate balance of execution and evolution requires a company to lean on its strategic vendors for assistance.

Companies like SAP are at the core of businesses operations for a diverse range of companies such as Bosch, Nestle and Royal Dutch Shell. To learn more about how various industries are approaching digital transformation, I attended SAP's SAPPHIRE and ASUG conference. The conference provides ample opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation initiatives with various business leaders and SAP executives. There were at least seven key takeaways that every business leader should consider as they build transformation strategies.

  7. A complete overhaul of healthcare’s digital user experience to bring forth high-quality and innovative care is a huge undertaking. But the physicians and facilities that prioritize patient experience will see an increase in satisfaction when the digital user experience improves. According to HBR, 97% of patients surveyed were satisfied with their first telehealth experience. And 74% of patients felt that the interaction improved their relationship with their provider.

According to a recent study completed by SAP Center for Business Insight, 400 global C-level executives agreed that digital transformation is critical to survival and healthcare organizations are in the early stages of this journey.
