  1. The new product development cycle can be quite complex, especially when it comes to technology. There’s a lot of planning, testing and tinkering that must happen before a tech product is ready to hit the market, and sometimes it requires going back to the drawing board.

    An essential step in this process is usability testing, which helps determine whether a product functions as expected or whether it needs additional fine tuning.   2. Social proof (sometimes referred to as informational social influence) is a psychological concept. It refers to the tendency of human beings to follow the actions of others when making decisions and placing weight on those actions to assume “the correct decision”. It’s a concept that can be used in product design for the Internet and mobile web to help drive user decisions in the direction that a business wants them to go.

    Human beings are social creatures. We live in communities, towns and cities. We raise families and have friends. It’s what defines us. It also makes us vulnerable to the influence of other people. Social influence, which is what we refer to when we talk about the impact of other people’s actions on our own, can be very positive (it’s what, for example, makes us less likely to get drunk and start fights in public) but it can also be negative (when it leads to “herd behaviour” or “following the crowd”).

  5. Allow me to start with a quick summary of this article:

    There's a 270% gap in conversions between desktop and mobile, because mobile websites suck and we’re all doing it wrong. (Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’ll explain why and what needs to be done to fix this.)

    At its essence, responsive design is supposed to make a cross-device world a more seamless experience by adapting your desktop design to a smaller mobile screen. Unfortunately, condensing all that desktop content into such a small screen has the exact opposite effect — it's actually causing huge loss in conversion rates. But how?

  6. For almost a decade, we’ve talked about wanting to modernize enterprise software user interfaces (UI) to match consumer software, but we’ve gone about it the wrong way. The modernization of UI was proposed as a solution to meet the increased expectations that enterprise software should be as simple to use and nice to navigate as the applications we use at home from any device. But investing in software UI that merely looks beautiful is a waste of time and resources.

  7. Within the digital realm, faster is almost always synonymous with better. Whether its an internet browser boasting faster loading speeds or a new mobile app that offers a quicker way to order food, when it comes to our digital experiences we want our goals completed as soon as possible.

    In the UX world, this holds true often enough. Designers dedicate so much of the SDLC to streamlining user flows or simplifying processes, usually with the intent of making things easier, friendlier, and faster.

    So while most designers know there are exceptions to the ‘faster = better UX’ rule (the benefits of injecting friction to an experience are well-documented), fewer grasp the role that speed, and more fundamentally, time, plays in an experience.

    In fact, timing is so crucial to UX design that the usability gurus at NNG have crafted an entire ‘powers of ten’-based system for it.

    So how can you ensure an experience you are crafting has user-friendly timing? How do you know if a digital product is responding too slow (or, more intriguingly, too fast?) And how can you design experiences while keeping timing in mind?

  8. User Experience (UX) is critical to the success or failure of a product in the market but what do we mean by UX? All too often UX is confused with usability which describes to some extent how easy a product is to use and it is true that UX as a discipline began with usability – however, UX has grown to accommodate rather more than usability and it is important to pay attention to all facets of the user experience in order to deliver successful products to market.

  10. This subject may seem incredibly “big” for a single article, but it’s about the specific nature of usability that we often overlook or confuse. With this appreciation, you’ll be able to design more effectively, and your website’s usership will be able to grow, too.

    Usability replaced the outmoded label “user friendly” in the early 1990s. “Usability” has had trouble finding the definition we use now. Different approaches to what made a product “usable” splintered between looking at it with the view of the product in mind (i.e., the ergonomic design, such as a curved keyboard); looking at it from the point of view of the user (how much work and satisfaction/frustration he/she experiences using it); and the view of the user’s performance, which involves how easy the product is to use, if it’s to be used in the real world.
