  2. When it comes to comparing user experience (UX) and branding, it seems like everyone has an opinion.

UX’s goal is to make sure that the user’s experience is as pleasant as possible whereas branding is there to ensure consistency throughout. At some point, design is going to get to where we must make decision between making a more agreeable experience for the user or maintaining brand identity. However, UX and brand identity overlap more than you might think. I always end up asking myself; are they really two sides of a coin?

  3. When a small-to-mid-sized business first implements a new technology, it’s often only one person inside the company who owns the entire product. In the early ’90s when the web was in its infancy, my role included everything from copywriting to graphic design, coding, and basically everything that was needed to create a website. There wasn’t nearly the same focus or variety of roles working on the web as exists today, so I was the only one who knew how to do it.

  4. In practice, functional design always defeats aesthetic design. A web resource with good UX and bad visual design always surpasses, from the marketing point of view, a digital product with a magnificent “look and feel”, but which “rewards” the user with a negative interactive experience.

  5. There’s no getting around it—flight delays are a pain. You’ve made plans wherever you’re going, or you’ve got a meeting two hours after you land, but no matter how you slice it, you won’t get there on time. It’s frustrating for everyone involved, just the sort of thing you didn’t need on your already-stressful trip.

  6. One word summarizes the challenge of securing the Internet of Things (IoT): scale.

It’s actually a two-fold challenge. The first issue is the sheer number of IoT devices connected to the internet -- a total that continues to grow every year. Gartner estimates that number will reach 26 billion by 2020. Secondly, how can device manufacturers and security providers possibly scale the process of identifying and authenticating each and every one of those devices?

  7. There’s a new $25-per-month price point to sign up as a Salesforce user today as Salesforce Essentials goes live in 18 languages. This new entry-level offering for small business customers marks a return to Salesforce’s original mantra of serving every size of customer from a single platform, and company veteran Mike Rosenbaum, Executive Vice-President of CRM Applications, is mighty pleased about it..

  9. Hiring enough software engineers, DevOps managers, cloud computing specialists and other roles required to facilitate IT transformations remain tall tasks for CIOs. But the talent crunch isn't limited to those with coding skills and algorithmic thinking: Enterprises are also struggling to hire staff with soft skills who can help shape the user experience around digital services.

  10. The payments business has undergone a massive revolution. While online shopping technology has surged forward with better shopping cart systems, AI-assisted tools to help you find what you're looking for - even when you don't know what you want, and greatly improved user interfaces, payments have languished. Andy Barker, the head of payments at online commerce shopping provider Magento, and I spoke about this at the recent MagentoLive event.
