  2. Oh, how things change!

There was a time when you just had to optimize your website’s pages for a group of different keywords and then when someone typed those words into a search engine, you’d show up! Not anymore.

Today, the search engines are way more advanced with their algorithms and their focus on trying to make sure that the user experience is the best it can be. Especially with Google.

  3. For more than a decade I’ve optimized organic search performance for big and small companies. They often come to my team with greatly diminished search performance stemming from decisions based solely on user experience and design. The decisions resulted in changes to internal linking structures and reduced textual content, which affected the authority and relevance signals that search engines rely on to rank pages.

  7. Recently my CEO shared a nice thought provoking article titled law of sh*tty click-through rates. It was a great article with a lot of great insights. The main point the article highlights is that over time all marketing strategies result in shitty click-through rates.

  8. Well-designed digital systems and government websites are crucial for e-governance to succeed.

Governor of Hawaii David Ige had a Muffley moment earlier this month. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency had just pushed out a false ballistic missile alert on cellphones and airwaves. Ige was informed of the mistake within 2 minutes. But it would take 38 minutes for a public correction. The alert system, it turned out, had no cancellation option. How, Ige might have wondered like Cold War satire Dr. Strangelove’s hapless US President Merkin Muffley facing the prospect of nuclear armageddon, was it possible for the thing to be impossible to untrigger?

  10. The lure of machine learning isn’t always about big new features; often, what it does best are small tweaks that subtly improve user experience. So it is with Twitter’s use of neural networks to automatically crop picture previews to their most interesting part.
