  1. Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere, driven by large investments, lots of startups, all established technology vendors, and enterprises big and small experimenting with what it can do for their bottom line. 120 predictions for AI in 2019 did not exhaust the subject, so here are 20 more.

  2. AI systems and devices will soon recognize, interpret, process, and simulate human emotions. A combination of facial analysis, voice pattern analysis, and deep learning can already decode human emotions for market research and political polling purposes. With companies like Affectiva, BeyondVerbal and Sensay providing plug-and-play sentiment analysis software, the affective computing market is estimated to grow to $41 billion by 2022, as firms like Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Apple race to decode their users’ emotions.

  3. CIOs are often inundated with vendor promises of a user experience so superb, they won’t need to fret about employee training. But CIOs should be skeptical when they hear promises like these, especially when it comes to AI and automation technologies.

  4. Perhaps no other technology was as disruptive as artificial intelligence in 2017. ‘Machine learning,’ ‘neural network,’ and ‘data bias’ became commonplace terms in the headlines of mainstream media outlets, signifying the machines had arrived. And with them comes an uncertain future.

We reached out to several experts to tell us what to expect from AI in 2018.

  5. Every time I sign into any social media platform, someone has an opinion on the future of voice. It’s either the future we all deserve from the technology at our fingertips or it’s another passing fad that will come and go. The overwhelming conversation is the issue with the user experience around voice. How it’s too public, too confusing, too nuanced, a general feeling that people will not take to it. It’s too futuristic and intimidating for the average person to interact with regularly. All of those points might very well be true, but I take issue with the reason behind why we accept that.

Throughout the digital evolution, we have pointed to a myriad of technologies that would “never be adopted” for whatever reasoning at the time. The fact is that at every turn, there have been challenges with the UX because humans are, by condition, bad at change. The thing that overcomes those challenges is function, which is the real issue right now in voice.

  6. For a few years now, there have been rumblings that virtual assistants might actually start talking to one other. And in a pretty hilarious feat, people have figured out how to literally get Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant to chatter together in an endless loop. While this was entertaining, it’s the real-life partnership that Amazon and Microsoft have formed to have their virtual assistants truly talk to each other that is worth paying attention to.

Both companies are enabling Microsoft’s business and productivity-focused Cortana to engage with Amazon's consumer- and ecommerce-focused Alexa. A command of “Cortana, open Alexa” will enable Microsoft users to do things such as control smart devices in their homes, or access any of the other third-party skills available on Alexa such as making a payment on a credit card, ordering a pizza or even turning their Anova Precision Cooker up a few degrees.

  7. Another year has passed and humanity, for better or worse, remains in charge of the planet. Unfortunately for the robots, TNW has it on good authority they won’t take over next year either. There’s always 2020.

In the meantime, here’s what the experts think will happen in 2019:

  8. Enterprise mobility has, for long, promised to be a channel that would allow employees to work from wherever they want and be productive. This approach would not only improve the accuracy and efficiency of workers but would also allow them to be operational without any geographical constraints. Further, the addition of artificial intelligence (AI) into enterprise mobility will deliver the high-end results to the businesses.

AI will bring a change in the operational workflow of an organization in multiple ways and departments. The impact will be noticed across areas like device management, user experience, security, and applications. However, privacy concerns will also continue to rise in the wake of these new technologies, and advanced security measures need to be employed to prevent the data from misuse.

  9. The Internet has completely transformed since its evolution, and so has the web development. Websites with standard text pages, few pictures, and font variation are the tales of the old days. Today, the advancement of web technologies has enabled the web development to include images and audiovisual content for delivering another level of user-experience than just information.

Moreover, Gartner has predicted that by 2020, enterprises will manage 85% of their relationship with customers without any human interaction. Therefore, it implies that Artificial Intelligence will enable customers to interact effectively. As part of this, machines will simulate the human intelligence processes involving the learning, reasoning, and self-correction.
