  1. By now, you’ve heard about the importance of both UX (user experience) and CX (customer experience) when it comes to a company’s survival. While that’s true, a lot is still unclear about which is actually more important to prioritize.

    The answer? Both.

UX is reflective on the usability of a company’s website, whereas CX focuses on customer interactions and meeting overall expectations. The UX of an airline company, for example, would relate to the usability of the mobile app interface and website: how easy it is to purchase flight tickets, access flight information, download a boarding pass, etc.

  3. Every day, the ProgrammableWeb team is busy, updating its three primary directories for APIs, clients (language-specific libraries or SDKs for consuming or providing APIs), and source code samples. If you have new APIs, clients, or source code examples to add to ProgrammableWeb's directories, we offer forms (APIs, Clients, Source Code) for submitting them to our API research team. If there's a listing in one of our directories that you'd like to claim as the owner, please contact us at editor@programmableweb.com.

Twelve APIs have been added to the ProgrammableWeb directory in categories including Financial, Billing, and Feedback. Some highlights include the Gfycat API for programmatic access to the animated GIF platform, and the Rev.io API for usage-based billing functions. Here's a rundown of the latest additions.

  4. In this age of big data and hyper-personalization, companies are putting their best foot forward when it comes to targeting and attracting new customers. As a result, they focus time and energy on not only personalized marketing, but on optimizing the entire user experience to be an enjoyable and hassle-free experience. Most businesses collect data from users to provide an experience more tailored to their needs. Most people’s idea of user experience refers to an end-users interaction with a company’s product or service, including copy, design, usability, and branding. But with the rise of GDPR, user experience must expand to include data privacy and security.

  5. What is best practice when it comes to UX? Unfortunately, a lot of advice out there on 'user experience' (UX) directly contradicts other advice. Some of this bad advice is simply out of date, but some is simply wrong—always was, always will be.

How do these myths take hold? Sometimes what makes for good advice is sector-dependent and not universally applicable, other times it's because of "truthiness": "Don't make users click more than three times" sounds like it should be true, even if it isn't.

Confusion over best practices for UX reign over every sector. This confusion creates myths, and these myths create disjointed experiences that actively work against the frictionless customer experience.

    So what are these myths?

  7. For some of the biggest and most considered products and services, the decision to buy doesn’t always come down to a solo customer.

From finance and utilities, to travel, household goods, and entertainment, we often buy (and use) products and services as a couple, family unit, or group of friends.

Why then do many of the online systems we use treat customers as solo decision-makers, tying customer accounts to an individual email address and neglecting (or even discouraging) sharing and collaboration?

  8. Today it's obvious that a company needs an effective website; in fact, it's hard to remember when websites were not accepted practice. A similar trend is in its early stages -- every company will need a branded digital assistant that communicates in human language. The company's digital assistant will be available through multiple channels such as mobile phones, and via the commercial personal assistants (e.g., Alexa "skills").

  9. In Part 1 in this two-part series, Chris Braunsdorf and I explained that, in an environment where UX maturity is low, onboarding User Experience with an enterprise product team poses unique challenges. However, you can overcome these challenges by:
    +conducting early user research
+requesting the feedback of individual team members
+receiving teammates’ input openly and patiently
+redirecting teammates’ feedback to align with your user-centered approach
+recruiting team members as active participants in your UX research and design activities.

However, once you’ve onboarded User Experience in your organization, you must demonstrate certain skills to ensure that it becomes an essential component for your enterprise product teams going forward. These skills extend beyond your UX design capabilities.

  10. User interface is probably one of the 21st century’s most important languages. I mean, people are simply talking more through their devices and computers compared to any other time in history. We dissect the latest albums through the comment section of a music blog, we date through Tinder and we discuss work matters through Slack. We might use English to communicate but we interact with all of those mediums through the use of a user interface.

Graphical user interface (GUI) isn’t a new concept, it has always been a focus of software development ever since they released the first Macintosh, which we know now as a Mac. Today, user interface can be seen in the weirdest of devices from smart refrigerators to smart watches. Still, even with more than decades of experience under our belt, it’s still pretty common to see amateurish UI mistakes pop up every now and then in web design.
